For early budgeting, allow roughly £600 to £1,500 plus VAT for a straightforward commercial door, but do not compare access control quotes on a single per-door figure. The lock, door condition, cabling, fire alarm interface, credentials, software and commissioning can matter more than the reader itself. A site survey is the only reliable way to turn a budget range into a firm price.

Quick budget: allow about £3,000 to £7,500 plus VAT for a straightforward five-door commercial system. Then add any intercoms, specialist locks, fire alarm work, barriers, software subscriptions or repairs to the doors themselves.

A quote that only says "access control to five doors" leaves too much open. Ask the installer to name the reader, lock, controller, release devices, credentials, software and any exclusions for each door.
The door often decides the cost. A timber office door with an accessible cable route is usually simpler than an aluminium shopfront, frameless glass door, external gate or certified fire door. The installer needs to check the leaf, frame, hinges, closer and existing lock before choosing hardware.
If a door drags, does not latch or has a damaged closer, access control will not cure it. Door repairs may need to happen before the electronic lock is fitted.
A standalone keypad or fob reader can suit one low-risk internal door. Users are normally added at the door, and reporting is limited. It costs less but becomes awkward when staff change or several doors need the same permissions.
A networked system manages doors and users from one place. It can remove a lost credential quickly, apply time schedules and keep an event record. Cloud managed systems can add remote administration and multi-site control, usually with a continuing licence or subscription. Ask what happens to the doors and the management software if that subscription ends.
Key fobs and cards are inexpensive individually, but a business with hundreds of users needs to budget for enrolment, spares and replacements. Mobile credentials may reduce plastic cards but can bring licence costs and extra support when staff change phones.
Older low-frequency proximity credentials can be easier to copy than modern encrypted formats. If the quote uses cards or fobs, ask exactly which credential technology is being supplied rather than accepting the word "smart".
A new fit-out with open ceilings and planned containment is cheaper to cable than a finished office with solid walls, asbestos controls or restricted working hours. Evening and weekend work, access equipment, fire stopping and decorative making good can all change the total.
Access control may need to work with an intercom, fire alarm, intruder alarm, CCTV or lift. Each link needs a clear purpose and an agreed cause-and-effect response. For example, CCTV can show the video associated with a forced-door event, while the fire alarm may need to release selected locks during an evacuation.

Scale can reduce the average cost per door because controllers, software and project setup are shared. That saving disappears if the doors are spread across separate buildings or need different hardware.

Government fire safety guidance draws a clear distinction between controlling entry and restricting escape. People should be able to leave without a key or code, and emergency doors must open easily. Where electronic locks are used on escape routes, the release arrangements need to match the fire risk assessment and the way the building is occupied.
This is one reason an online access control kit price is a poor guide to the finished job. A suitable system may need an emergency release, fire alarm interface, battery backup, appropriate exit hardware and documented testing. The door may also need to retain its fire and smoke performance.
For most offices, cards, fobs or mobile credentials are easier to justify. Fingerprint and facial recognition systems process biometric information. When a business uses that information to identify a person, the ICO treats it as special category data and expects stronger safeguards.
The business should be able to show that biometric access is necessary and proportionate, complete a data protection impact assessment where required, tell workers what happens to their data and provide a workable alternative where appropriate. A biometric reader should not be added simply because it looks more secure.
List the doors you want to control, the people who use them and the times they need access. Mark any fire exits, public entrances, shared tenant doors and areas that need stronger restrictions. Then arrange a survey.
